A WES GT Parent explains why AR works:
I'm so glad you have the kids read non-fiction. I've always thought
this, but when we were in the Bahamas
I saw one of the benefits. We went to a resturant that was appropriately named
Pier 1 because it is built
hanging out over the ocean like a pier. Every night at 7,8, & 9 they ring
a bell, and the sharks come to the
restaurant and feed. The waitress comes around and tells everyone when they
are about to do this, and everyone leaves their food and goes out to watch.
At first it was only "sort of cool," the
sharks are plentiful but only about 2 feet long. Then the bell rings. A large
chunk of food is thrown from the roof of the resturant and suddenly 6 foot
sharks come out of no where right before your eyes. It was amazing for many
reasons, but the thing that really got me was how there is no movement in the
water at all until the fin silently breaks through the water. If you've ever
watched fish, they splash and move the water especially if they turn around
quickly. NOT SHARKS! OK, now to the books. There were many sharks and a variety
of them. My little shark scholar was informing all of us what they were any
why. At first the other tourist looked at him like "yeah right," but
the more he talked the more obvious it was that he knew what he was talking about because
his explanations
where so clear and scientific!! He had recently read a non-fiction AR book
on sharks. Proud Mama!! Thanks for the AR program!!
