Reading

The fifth grade reading program consists of in class work, Accelerated Reader, and homework.

In class we read fiction and nonfiction texts and complete various assignments to help sharpen our reading skills.  The students apply these skills and strategies we learn to help them read, write, and comprehend text.  We also read and discuss novels as a class and in groups to help prepare for the End of Grade test.

The fifth grade is heavily involved in Accelerated  Reader.  Each student has been assigned a reading level, based on their ability.  Students check out books from the library on their assigned level.  Students read their book and should be able to understand it without difficulty.  In class the students take a quiz on their book to test their comprehension.  They earn points if they pass the quiz.  The following chart shows the amount of points your student should be able to earn if they read for homework and use their time wisely during silent reading in class.  Ask your child their reading range and you can use the following chart to determine the number of AR points for each monthly goal for which your student is responsible.  We have students reading from a beginning 2nd grade level to the 12th grade level.
