Here in fourth grade, your child will participate in an exciting computerized reading program, Accelerated Reading (AR).

*We require students to switch off their books. After they read/test on a fiction (made-up) story, they must choose a non-fiction (true) story.
  • AR involves the Reading teacher assigning a student to their reading level.
  • Next, the student chooses a library book from the classroom or media center.
  • After the student has read the book, they take a computer test on it that asks comprehension questions.
  • A printout is made and the students moves on to their next book.
  • Children earn points for each test, as long as they pass it, so we encourage not only point totals, but testing accuracy as well. For instance, for a 1.0 point book, a student needs to score 10 out of 10 correctly to earn the whole point. If they miss one, their percentage will go to 90%, and they will only earn 0.9 points.
  • Points are important, but the percentage correct means more for us.
  • In the beginning of the year, we will work with each child to set a realistic goal for them. Please check their TOPS reports to see their goals.
  • Each reading class has their own unique way to keep track of the class' progress. Click on the teacher's name to see their layout.
  • Please help us to encourage your child to read. While accumulating 16 points in one 9 week period may seem like a lot, if students are reading 1-2 books weekly and testing, this should be an easy total to reach.

Handwriting
Writing is very important to us in fourth grade. In order for our students to be achieving at their highest possible level, please encourage neatness at all times. We encourage neatness in handwriting at school frequently. Please do not settle for anything less at home. When students write an assignment that is sloppy or messy, we will have the student recopy it. Please work on doing this at home as well. We allow our students to print or write (cursive), which ever they can do quicker and neater.

English Rules and Grammar
Proper English is encouraged and taught in fourth grade reading classes. We work on all fundamentals of the parts of speech, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, and pronouns. We also work on using proper
English in our writing. We practice using proper grammar and punctuation in content and on our Morning Work. Classes will also study different parts of speech (nouns, verbs, etc.) and take quizes on them.

What Can You Do?

Download these forms on prefixes. Many words possess
prefixes, so if a student can figure the prefix's meaning, they can figure out the word.
