Just for Math Trailblazers Families

Math Trailblazers

geometry

This year we will to use an excellent resource when teaching your child Mathematics, called Math Trailblazers. This program is based on the ideas that mathematics is best learned in real-world contexts that make sense to children; that al students deserve a richer and more challenging curriculum; and that a balanced and practical approach to mathematics learning is what students need.

  • Your child really has a tough job this year. In addition to the transition from third to fourth grade, they are also transitioning between completing concrete work (simple arithmetic) into more complex, abstract work (problem solving). With help and cooperation from home and school, your child can be successful.
  • Encourage your child to CHECK THEIR WORK. At times we think this must be a new concept to our children. Many careless mistakes are made that could easily be caught if students would check their work carefully. This is something you can encourage your child to do on their homework. Check to be sure they are taking the time to go back and look over their calculations.

  • Encourage your child to show their work as well. Most word problems cannot be solved in their heads, so they need to show the operations of how the problem was solved. More often than wanting a 'right' answer, we look to see if the students can complete the correct processes to solve the problem. Please encourage this at home. They ARE permitted to underline or highlight 'key words' in each problem.

  • Accelerated Math (ACC Math) allows each student to work at his or her on pace on important math skills. The student works on a prepared packet, then they scan their work on the computer. The computer prints them out a TOPS report which tells them which (if any) problems they missed as well as their next assignment. Students also take tests on this program. Our teachers like this program because it allows them to conference individually with the students on the problems they missed. Your math teachers and even your Reading/Social Studies teachers will help with conferencing. We require students to complete at least one assignment a week. Please encourage your child to work on ACC Math whenever they can. Students will be creating quarterly goals for themselves to reach once they are comfortable with the program after the first quarter.

and practice with your child. All the right answers are
given, and you can make problems up to help
    your child!!

  • State Curriculum Pacing Guide -We follow the state's curriculum for our instruction. The state has issued a pacing guide which shows what we should work on each nine weeks. Click on the link to see the appropriate pacing guide.
