WES GT's Homework Policy

Wendell Elementary GT Magnet School’s Homework Plan

Homework is intended to enrich, reinforce, and extend the curriculum, and students have the responsibility for their own homework.

Our school implements the Wake County Public School System homework policy. Please refer to the student/parent handbook or www.wcpss.net for the complete policy.

Policy Guidelines:
1. Assignments will be specific and based on previously studied concepts for enrichment and/or review purposes.
2. Homework is considered an integral part of class instruction and is used to guide instruction. It is reflected in a student’s work habit grade.
3. Research-based guidelines for minutes of homework per day:
o K-2 – 20 minutes per day
o 3-5 – 50 minutes per day

Student’s Role:
Although grade-level specifics vary, students are expected to make sure they understand the assignment and have the required materials to complete it before leaving school for the day. Students are also responsible for returning independently completed homework to school by the assigned time with any required signatures.

**Remember: Always do your best!

Parent’s Role:
Parent involvement is an important part of the total program. The parent’s role should be one of interest, praise, encouragement, and support.

General Guidelines:
1. Provide a quiet place to study that has good light.
2. See that the student has a certain time set aside to study.
3. Encourage the student to read daily. Younger children will need to read aloud to someone and/or have someone read to them.
4. Help the student organize his/her books and materials the night before so that he/she doesn’t forget needed materials the next day.
5. See that the student gets a sufficient amount of sleep each night.
6. Sign and return required materials each day (i.e. weekly folders and agendas).

Grade-Specific Guidelines:
K& 1st – Parents should read the monthly homework calendar and assist/guide allowing for student independence. Parents should assist as needed. Homework is due each Friday for the previous week.
2nd thru 5th grades – Parents may help with directions, but students will need to complete homework independently. Homework will be reviewed at school. As students learn new concepts, teachers expect that parents will not complete or correct their child’s homework so that teachers may better assess student understanding. Parents are encouraged to use the agenda or email to communicate any problems in understanding or completing an assignment.

Carpool
Carpool Procedures at Wendell GT Magnet Elementary 2007-2008

Morning Drop Off-
Carpool students should be dropped off at the front of the school off Wendell Blvd. in the carpool loop area. Drop off may begin when the adults and Safety Patrol are stationed on duty at 8:00am. Students may not be released from vehicles prior to 8:00am. After students exit a vehicle, vehicles should remain in a single file line and exit the carpool loop. Due to the large amount of pedestrian traffic in the mornings, passing stopped vehicles is not safe and will not be allowed in the carpool loop. If you need to enter the building, please park in the gravel area to the left of the carpool loop and do not block the carpool lane.

It is important to remember that instruction for students begins at 8:30am. All students should arrive at school with time to get to classrooms and be ready to work by 8:30am. Carpool students wishing to eat breakfast should be dropped off no later than 8:15am. All outside entrance doors, except the main school entrance, will be locked each day at 8:30am. If your child arrives after the 8:30am tardy bell (the adults and Safety Patrol will have left the carpool loop), you will need to escort your child to the front office and sign your child in for the day. An ADULT is required to sign students in or out once the school day has begun. Late students are not admitted to class without a tardy slip from the front office. Thank you for your cooperation!

Afternoon Dismissal-
Carpool students should sign up with the school office, and parents will be assigned a plastic carpool tag. This tag should be prominently displayed in the front windshield for safety identification during dismissal.
At the end of the school day, carpool students will be escorted to the cafeteria by teachers and then dismissed to their respective vehicles according to the school issued carpool tag displayed in the front window of the vehicle. The school will provide each family with two carpool tags free of charge.

To insure the safety of our students, carpool students WILL NOT be dismissed from the front office between 2:40-3:15 pm unless the parent has written a note to the teacher. Students will ONLY be released into vehicles displaying the school issued carpool tag. If someone other than yourself will pick your child up in the carpool lane, please send a written note to your child’s teacher on that day so that your child can be dismissed in the carpool lane. For the protection of all students, individuals missing school issued carpool tags or those who walk to the cafeteria for pick up must go to the office to check students out in the front office by showing proper identification and receiving a signed and dated dismissal slip. Students will only be released to persons listed on the child’s locator card and if necessary, we will hold the child at school until a parent/guardian can be contacted.

Although the first few weeks of carpool dismissal are a bit slow going, when everyone follows procedures, the process becomes a safe and efficient way to dismiss students.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Carpool Do's
  • proceed at a safe speed when driving on school property
  • watch out for other drivers
  • watch our for our students

Carpool Don'ts
  • block the carpool lane
  • use the exit of the school to enter school property, especially to get to the handicapped parking spots
  • drop your child(ren) at the back of the school (Academy Street) where the buses load and unload
  • turn left out of the carpool lane onto Wendell Blvd.
  • pick up your children or tell them to meet you in the faculty parking lot

Grants
Teachers really rely on additional funding to meet special needs in their classrooms. Whether
the funding will purchase additional books, a digital camera, or even help toward a field trip,
grants really help in the classroom. There is a cost, however. To write a grant, one that possesses
the chance to receive funding, requires the teacher(s) to write a proposal that accurately portrays
a necessary need and how the materials will help. We commend our teachers, who work tirelessly
seeking and receiving grant monies.

You can help our school as well! Visit Donors Choose. On this site you can view grants from
teachers across the country, in North Carolina, or just from Wendell. You (and your company) can fully fund them, or just partially fund a grant. We really rely on this program now, so we appreciate any help you can give!!
