How to Play

About Ms. Atkinson

This site is about playing the violin. You will learn to play and hold your violin correctly. So get your violin ready to play.

First we'll teach you how to hold the violin or viola and how to hold the bow.

One important rule, NEVER TOUCH THE HAIR OF THE BOW!!!!

Your probably thinking, "I didn't know that a bow had hair?" Well we have a answer and that answer is: The hair on a bow isn't like the hair on our heads, it's the hair from a horse! So now that that's over we're moving on to "How to Hold and use the Bow." First you pick up the bow and place it on a string. After you place the bow on a string you pull the bow up and down not pressing to hard and there you go you've made music!!!A tip to keep your bow sounding good is to put rossin on the bow. If you take orchestra you will learn more about it.

Now you will learn "How to play the Violin or Viola". First you will ofcourse pick up the instrument and then you will place the end of the instrument where the chin rest is and place your chin there.(you will learn more about that if you take orchestra) Once you have the violin/viola in place you curve your fingers slightly around but not touching the strings. If you want to touch the strings you curve your fingers more and press down but not to hard or it sound to pretty. There are 20different notes in music. There are 4 strings and 4 notes on each string, but 5 notes in all counting the main string.(4x5=20)
